1860 Robert E. Lee leaves San Antonio for the last time and travels to Fort Mason. He will be relieved of command of the 2nd Cavalry and ordered to return to Washington D. C. in February 1861.
1981 A Southwestern Bell phone cable is accidentally severed by a CPS repair crew trying to remove a utility pole damaged by a car. The outage affects 10,500 customers in the 73 exchange in the northwest part of the city and lasts for three days.
1985 San Antonio's first Times Square-styled New Year's Eve celebration will cost $39,000 in private donations. City Council approved the expenses today because the money will be placed in a municipal account. $30,000 of the cost will be for a 22-minute fireworks show by Paul Austin of Kansas.
