BATAVIA, IL — Reckless driving, speeding and disobeying traffic signals are just a few of the traffic violations cited against a 21-year-old St. Charles resident after he attempted to flee police and crashed into two cars Tuesday night, according to Batavia police. Officers were dispatched to the area near North Prairie Street and Maves Drive around 9:49 p.m. after witnesses reported reckless driving. Police said a red car had been seen driving at high speeds around the neighborhood and nearly hit several cars. While responding to the call, an officer spotted the described car without headlights speeding west in the 100 block of West Wilson Street. When police began chasing the car to pull over the driver — identified as Ethan S. Viland, of the 900 block of South 10th Street in St. Charles — officials said the driver kept driving and blew the light at the intersection of West Wilson St. and Route 31. Continuing on Wilson Street, Viland crossed into oncoming traffic at the intersection with Van Nortwick Avenue where he almost hit an eastbound squad car. The driver continued on and at the speed he was going eventually lost police, officials said. Officers caught up with the reckless driver at the intersection with Randall Road, where they found Viland had crashed into two other cars. The 21-year-old was arrested without incident. No injuries were reported as a result of the crash, officials said. After consulting with the Kane County State's Attorney's Office, Batavia police charged the man with two Class 4 felonies: aggravated fleeing of a police officer and aggravated fleeing and eluding police while disobeying traffic signals.
