TAMPA, FL — A 25-year-old Apopka man was arrested when he showed up to claim his car that was involved in a fatal hit-and-run crash over the weekend.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Christopher Xavier Cardenas Alvelo arrived at the McDonald's at 4333 W Hillsborough Ave. near Lois Avenue in Tampa Tuesday to retrieve his white 2016 Hyundai Sonata that he'd abandoned in the restaurant parking lot following the crash.
Troopers had already been alerted about the car with a damaged front end that was found abandoned in the parking lot and were on the scene when Alvelo arrived.
He was arrested and taken to the Hillsborough County Jail where he's been charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving a death. His bond is set at $15,000.
The crash happened just before 6 a.m. Sunday. The victim, identified only as a Hispanic man, was killed while crossing Hillsborough Avenue near the intersection of Benjamin Road, troopers said.
