Description

The American Red Cross is a community-based humanitarian organization that prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. The Red Cross depends on dedicated volunteers to help support people impacted by emergencies and with the current disasters and the complexities of COVID-19, more help is needed now.  Will you be a true hero and help your community? Cindy Imperato, Broward County Chapter’s of the American Red Cross Chair of Board of Directors and current Co-Event Chair, invites you to be a part of the lifesaving work it does and sign up to become a Red Cross volunteer. Volunteering is one of the best ways to make a difference in your community. It also helps you build your resume and earn points for college credit, which makes it easier to pay for college. Volunteering in the Red Cross can be an enriching experience as well as a great way to meet new people who can help out during an emergency. As Cindy Imperato explains, volunteers carry out 90 percent of the humanitarian work of the Red Cross. They help victims of disaster, provide care and comfort to ill and injured service members and veterans, teach others lifesaving skills such as First Aid and CPR, help staff blood drives and much more. The need for volunteers is constant and continues to evolve as we navigate this Coronavirus health crisis, adds Cindy Imperato. One of the first things you should ask yourself before volunteering with the Red Cross is, "what's my connection to this organization?" The Red Cross offers a wide range of volunteer opportunities, so it's best to have a personal connection. In order to help you learn more about the opportunities that are available for you to help serve your community, the Red Cross organizes monthly virtual open house sessions where you can learn about Red Cross volunteer opportunities. The Open House events are hosted, on-line, via Microsoft Teams with the option to join by phone or computer. When considering how you want to volunteer, there are three main classifications: regular volunteers, disaster volunteers and event volunteers. Regular volunteers are those who commit their time on a regular basis with the Red Cross. Disaster volunteers typically serve during large-scale emergencies or natural disasters and event volunteers may participate in one-time events for one day or several days. In times of disaster or social isolation, it can be difficult for people to leave their homes and volunteer in the community. Even while staying home, there is opportunity to support Red Cross mission virtually by engaging with any number of our remote opportunities. In conclusion, volunteering can have many benefits. You can help others, you can learn new things, and you can make a positive impact on the world. But there are also a few key reasons why volunteering is beneficial to your life. Volunteering has been linked with reducing stress, increasing creativity, and decreasing anxiety. And it’s not just for people who want to work or volunteer in their spare time. There are many organizations that offer opportunities for people of all ages to get involved in their community.
