Description
Join us to gain a solid foundation of knowledge in propagating native plant species. Propagating plants (in this case native species) using various methods is the most economical way to increase their numbers. However, propagation is not without its challenges, and having the correct foundation of knowledge, and a basic set of skills can go a long way toward success. This class will consist of both classroom lecture and a hands-on workshop, in which we apply the techniques learned. in the class will be both propagation from seed, and vegetative (asexual) propagation, including layering, cuttings, grafting and micro-propagation. Other topics related to seed propagation will cover effective and ethical seed collection, seed cleaning, storage, processing, seed treatments to promote germination, proper sowing techniques, and care for newly emerged seedlings. Each student will have the opportunity to propagate and take home their selected plants. For this class, participants will have the opportunity to purchase our favorite reference for native plant propagation. Many of you know of Jan Midgley’s Native Plant Propagation - fourth edition. This is a self-published manual and may be reserved when registering for the class and paid for ($30) at the event. This class will count for required credits for our soon-to-be announced Certificate in the Study of Biodiversity. Please dress for the weather, wear close-toed shoes and bring along anything else you might need to enjoy an outside program in this season like water, a hat, sunscreen and the like. In the event of severe weather, programs may be cancelled and refunds offered.
