HOBOKEN, NJ — Two people lost their lives and several small businesses were damaged in a fire at the Hoboken Chambord factory building on Monday, but those affected are now trying to raise money on-line. We've been at Chambord Place since 2014. ... One year ago we moved into our dream space 38B Jackson Street, and we renovated the space. I have six other teachers working for me." Owner Caprice Burrell launched her GoFundMe to help accommodate clients who booked parties that are now canceled. By Tuesday evening they had amassed a little over $260. She wrote on Instagram: "To the other tenants in our building who also lost everything they have worked so hard for, we are with you. Our hearts break for you as we know your pain." They had raised more than $10,000 by Tuesday evening. In just three hours, the community contributed over $33,000 and shared words of support and encouragement. Heather and Shawn Bostwick donated $500 and wrote: "Shawn and I were heartbroken yesterday when we heard what happened. The CFH community is something we love being a part of and can't imagine being destroyed by this fire. Anything we can do to help rebuild we will." They identified on Tuesday one of the victims: Rosemarie Vos, 60. A 61-year-old man was also lost. The Prosecutor's Office would not say Tuesday where Vos lived or if she had a business in the building. The fire at 38 Jackson St. in Hoboken — which houses the Chambord artistic wallpaper company and other small businesses, but no residences — began around midnight, officials said. The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office released this information late Monday night: "On Monday, Dec. 20, at approximately 12:20 a.m., a Hoboken Police Officer while on patrol heard a loud explosion in the area of Jackson Street in Hoboken. First responders to the area found an active fire in a warehouse located at 38 Jackson St. "The Hoboken Fire Department responded and was assisted in extinguishing the fire by the Jersey City Fire Department and the North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue Department. The fire damaged several surrounding buildings and several of the building sustained severe water damage. The investigation into the origin and cause of the fire is pending. "During fire suppression activities, firefighters found two victims in the warehouse. They were pronounced dead at the scene. The cause and manner of death of the victims are pending the findings of the Regional Medical Examiner's Office. The Regional Arson Task Force is actively investigating this incident with assistance from the Hoboken Fire Department and Hoboken Police Department. JerseyDigs had reported last summer that a developer was in the process of purchasing the property.
