PALM DESERT, CA — The results of a Riverside County Sheriff's Department DUI checkpoint held in Palm Desert last week have been released.
The checkpoint, held from 7 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m. Saturday at Highway 111 and Painters Path, netted five arrests and 11 citations, according to the department.
Three people were arrested for driving under the influence, and two were nabbed for outstanding felony and misdemeanor warrants, the agency's numbers showed.
Eleven drivers were cited for operating a vehicle without a license and or a suspended/revoked license.
During the checkpoint, 231 drivers were screened, the department reported.
Checkpoint locations are based on a history of crashes and DUI arrests. The primary purpose of checkpoints is not to make arrests, but to promote public safety by deterring drivers from driving impaired, according to the agency.
"As businesses continue to reopen, including bars and restaurants, impaired driving remains a top traffic safety concern," the sheriff's department said.
Funding for the checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
