AURORA, IL — Water is a vital part of everyone's daily life, and in Aurora, residents are lucky to consume the best of the best, according to the Kane County Water Association. For the first time in four years, Aurora has been chosen by the association to win the 2021 Best Water in Kane County Award, officials announced at Tuesday night's City Council meeting. It's not the first time Aurora has won, though, as the city has previously been awarded first place in 2017, 2016, 2013, 2008, 2006, 2000, and 1998. Last week, a panel of judges on the commission compared water samples from towns across the county. Between Aurora, Carpentersville, Geneva, Montgomery, North Aurora, Saint Charles, Sugar Grove and West Dundee, the state's second-largest city earned the top ranking. "It tastes good. It smells good. It looks good," Mayor Richard Irvin said in a statement. Those three qualities the mayor described are the three categories judges examined in order to determine whose water supply is best. "None of this is possible without the daily effort of each member of our team," Water Production Superintendent David Schumacher said in a statement. "Whether it is maintaining equipment, operating systems, general upkeep of our sites, processing samples and performing analyses, budgeting for our required supplies, or any of the other necessary tasks to keep the Water Production Division going strong." At the Tuesday meeting, Irvin and City Council members raised a glass of water to salute the city's Water Production Division. "Thank you for all you guys do," the mayor said in his toast at the meeting. "Thank you for making Aurora proud, and thank you for bringing us the best tasting water in Kane County." Following the win, Aurora's drinking water will advance to the state water testing competition — Illinois WaterCon — taking place in March 2022. If it were to win there, that also wouldn't be a first. Aurora won an award for best tasting water in Illinois in 2009, 2008, 2007, 2000 and 1999.
