ROYAL OAK, MI — A woman who owns several African caracal cats agreed to surrender the cats after one of them escaped from its home Monday night around 8:00 p.m., Royal Oak Police said. Officers said they quickly found the cat in the neighborhood and returned it to its home on the 700 Block of E. Lasalle with the help of the owner. She was cited for the keeping of non-domestic animals, which is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of no more than $500 or 90 days in jail, authorities said. When the African caracal cat "Bam, Bam" escaped from the home in October, police said it was at least the third time the cats had escaped, and encouraged the owner to relocate the cats, which she did agree too. However, this time the owner surrendered her cats to officials, authorities said. Royal Oak Police and animal control officers from Berkley, Livonia and Redford went to the home on Tuesday and safely removed the cats from the home. The cats will be taken to the animal sanctuary, authorities said. "I would like to thank our animal control partners in Berkley, Livonia and Redford for their assistance and teamwork," Interim Police Chief Mike Moore said. Caracals are large nocturnal cats that feature a short face with two black stripes extending from the forehead to the nose, white patches around the eyes and mouth and tufted ears. They typically weigh between 20 and 40 pounds. Caracals do not fall under the exotic cat classification and is unregulated, according to the DNR.
