WEST VILLAGE, NY — The West Village currently has the highest COVID-19 positive rate in New York City, according to data from the city. For the week of Dec. 12 through 18, the 10014 ZIP code in the West Village had a positive rate of 15.09 percent — it is the only area in the five boroughs that surpassed the 15 percent mark. During that week, 558 new people living in the West Village tested positive for the virus, and the area had a median daily rate of 2,403 people getting tested. It is a staggering increase for a Lower Manhattan ZIP code that has spent the majority of the pandemic posting some of the lowest positive rates in the city. To give a little more perspective on the jump, the 10014 ZIP code had a positive rate of 1.59 percent from Nov. 30 to Dec. 5. Meaning that in the last two weeks, the positive rate in the West Village shot up by 13.5 percent. Omicron's arrival in New York City has seen positive test results surge in all five boroughs, but its effect on Greenwich Village and Lower Manhattan, in general, is particularly eyecatching. The ZIP code with the second-highest COVID positive rate in the city? That would be the 10012 ZIP code in Greenwich Village and SoHo, which has a positivity rate of 14.62 percent. Three of the five highest NYC ZIP code positive rates are in the West Village and Greenwich Village, and eight of the top 10 are in Lower Manhattan. 10014: Meatpacking District/West Village - 15.09 percent10012: Greenwich Village/SoHo - 14.62 percent10309: Charleston/Prince's Bay - 14.20 percent10007: Tribeca - 14.15 percent10003: East Village/Greenwich Village - 13.52 percent10005: Financial District - 13.37 percent10011: Chelsea - 13.30 percent10009: East Village/Alphabet City - 13.25 percent10013: Little Italy/SoHo/TriBeCa - 13.25 percent11697: Breezy Point - 13.20 percent The East Village/Greenwich Village's 10003 ZIP code had the second most new positives of any area in New York City with 1,066 new people catching the virus from Dec. 12 through 18. There have been some people online saying that Lower Manhattan's positivity rate is higher because residents in the area are getting more tests than other parts of the borough. While there is some truth to residents in Greenwich Village area ZIP codes getting tested more than most — the theory doesn't totally hold up. Out of the 10 most tested NYC ZIP codes between Dec. 12 and 18, just one was in Greenwich Village, and only two of the top seven were in Lower Manhattan.
