BIRMINGHAM, AL — A 29-year-old Birmingham man is dead after a shooting in Ensley Tuesday night. The shooting occurred just before 8 p.m. at the Marathon gas station on 19th Street. Officer Truman Fitzgerald of the Birmingham Police Department said officers found Jequaris Jerryll McCann unresponsive in the parking lot of the gas station, suffering from gunshot wounds. He was taken to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The preliminary investigation suggests several suspects entered McCann's vehicle while it was parked at the location and unoccupied. Fitzgerald said the suspects were in the process of stealing McCann's vehicle when shots were fired, fatally wounding him. "While searching for the victim's vehicle, patrol officers observed the victim's vehicle in close proximity to the Marathon," Fitzgerald said. "Officers observed several males flee from the victim's vehicle. Officers then searched the area for the suspects and additional resources were deployed to the area to search for the suspects." Police say no suspects are in custody. Anyone who may have information on this case is asked to contact the Birmingham Police Department Homicide Unit at 205-254-1764.
