Description

"Tax Consequences of an Involuntary Conversion of a Principal Residence" - with guest speaker Kacie Czapla, J.D., LL.M, CPA Receiving payment for a principal residence destroyed by a casualty or condemned by a governmental body is an involuntary conversion. Tax professionals should understand the tax consequences of an involuntary conversion of a taxpayer's principal residence to be able to advise their clients properly. Join us on January 5th to hear Kacie Czapla speak on this topic. Kacie and her husband Ty are members of the Tyler law firm TLC Law, PLLC. Her husband started the practice in 2015 as a firm specializing in family and criminal law, but when Kacie joined in 2018, she added a completely different skill set to the firm’s repertoire. Kacie is a tax attorney and a CPA. She specializes in tax and business planning and some estate planning. As a tax attorney she aids taxpayers in their pursuit to pay the government its just share…but nothing more. Along the way, she appreciates and counsels on the non-tax aspects of running, buying, and selling a business. Before she moved to East Texas, she worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers in Houston in the Mergers and Acquisitions group. Prior to law school, she worked as a risk assessor for Bank of America in Dallas and was a paid intern in the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, & Pensions (which is, incidentally, where she met her husband). She also loves to teach. She has taught tax and business law at UT Tyler and Stephen F Austin. She still teaches as an adjunct at TJC. Kacie is originally from North Louisiana, but she graduated from the University of North Texas, with a degree in Economics. She attended law school at the University of Wyoming and obtained an LL.M in tax law in 2012 from the most prestigious and recognized tax school in the country, the University of Florida. Although she was born into a family of Tigers, she became a Gator. The horror. Kacie has two children, Ben and Lily. She enjoys spending time with them and loves reading, particularly British literature and fantasy/sci-fi. She is an avid baker and skier and enjoys the occasional unplanned road trip—particularly if it involves good BBQ.
