Description
PORT JEFFERSON, NY – Students and staff at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School took a lesson in English and journalism and turned it into a far-exceeding fundraising effort to assist a nation more than 8,500 miles away.
The "Save Madagascar" fundraiser was started after students in Paige Lohman and Laura Kelly's fifth grade class learned about the ongoing drought in the African island country that has led to food shortages and hunger.
Students created posters, visited the lower grade levels to share their research and student Jacob Fulton made daily announcements each morning to advertise the fundraiser.
With an intended goal of $320 to feed 45 people for one month, the schoolwide fundraising efforts raised $600 within a week.
