MEDFORD, MA — A symbol of hate speech was found inside the bathroom of a Medford school, Superintendent Marice Edouard-Vincent said. In her weekly update to families on Friday, Edouard-Vincent said the symbol was "scribbled inside a bathroom stall" in one of the elementary schools. She did not specify the nature of the symbol or when it was discovered. "The symbol has been removed, and we stand against hatred and violence in all forms," Edouard-Vincent said. The incident came on the heels of a tumultuous month in Medford schools, where focus has been placed on fostering a healthy environment for students in the wake of two violent fights and subsequent walkouts at the high school. Edouard-Vincent urged families to monitor their children's internet and social media access, which she said "expose our children to many disgraceful aspects of our society." "Medford Public Schools is a community welcome to all, and we are determined to remedy this act of hate with acts of tolerance and kindness," she continued. "While many districts are facing similar problems, we need the Medford community to partner with us to have conversations with your children." The district provided a Resource Guide for families who may need assistance.
