Here are the top 3 stories today in Burlington: A new program in the Queen City aims to take some of the sting out of settling up unpaid parking tickets by directing half the money to charity. Burlington announced that, between now and Jan. 15, it will donate half the money collected from payment of overdue fines to Feeding Chittenden, Vermont's largest direct service provider for emergency food needs. Helping charity may put a positive spin on the experience of paying a ticket, but there is also a stern message here: people who owe $275 or more in delinquent fines will soon be at risk of having their cars towed and impounded if they have future violations (NECN)The City Council in Burlington has voted to start a new search for a city police chief. Mayor Miro Weinberger last month asked the council to hire a search firm, increase the chief's pay and give the chief disciplinary power. He said he would move forward with the two candidates who have applied for the job, including current acting Chief Jon Murad, if the council did not act.(Associated Press)The American Red Cross is offering blood and plasma donors a chance to win tickets to the Super Bowl and a home theater package during January. Consider attending one of the Red Cross drives coming up in the Burlington area in the next few weeks. Donors are asked to schedule an appointment prior to arriving at the drive.
