Two Alten Construction projects recognized in Firehouse’s 2021 Station Design Awards Alten Construction, a full-service San Francisco Bay Area commercial construction company, recently had two projects recognized in Firehouse’s 2021 Station Design Awards. The eighth annual Station Design Awards serves as a showcase for fire and emergency services facilities. This year, 64 entries were received across seven categories from across the United States. Six judges, consisting of fire chiefs and architects who are experienced in emergency response facilities, were tasked with reviewing each entry to determine commitment to the health and safety of personnel, among other items. The San Rafael Public Safety Center, a 43,500-square-foot steel-framed facility, was awarded gold in the Shared Facilities category. The building houses the San Rafael Police Department, San Rafael Fire Department, the new Fire Station 51 and all associated offices and support. Located at 1375 Fifth Ave. in San Rafael, the more than $35 million project began in February 2019 and was built to LEED Gold specifications. The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District (Con Fire) Station 70, a 15,000-square-foot two-story fire station, was named notable in the Career 2 category. Located at 1800 23rd St. in San Pablo, the $9.778 million project was designed to meet LEED Silver equivalency per Contra Costa County’s standard for public buildings. It serves as a standing memorial to the two fallen Con Fire firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice on July 21, 2007 while attempting to rescue two elderly residents trapped in a burning home on nearby Michelle Drive. “We are so pleased to have two projects named in Firehouse’s 2021 Station Design Awards,” said Bob Alten, president and chief executive officer of Alten Construction. “Our reputation for quality and high standards has always remained our No.1 priority, and we are thrilled for this prestigious and nationwide recognition.” Alten Construction, a local, family-owned company, started 26 years ago with humble beginnings and big challenges by Bob Alten and Shannon Alten.
