Description

Press release from San Diego County Sheriff's Department: 12/20/2021 4:10 PM On December 1, 2021, at about 9:45 a.m., deputies at the San Diego Central Jail were serving food when they discovered an inmate, sixty-three-year-old Jerry Borunda, unresponsive in his cell. Deputies immediately entered the cell to render aid. Deputies and medical staff performed lifesaving measures until relieved by fire department personnel. Borunda was transported by ambulance to a local area hospital.  Unfortunately, Borunda's prognosis indicated he was not going to recover from his medical condition and his family was notified. The Homicide Unit responded to investigate. Borunda was housed in a cell by himself. No evidence of foul play was discovered. Due to the needs of the family and Borunda's condition, the San Diego Sheriff's Department petitioned the San Diego Superior Court for Borunda to be compassionately released from custody. The release was granted and on the evening of December 17, 2021, Borunda was released from custody. Sadly, the Sheriff's Department learned Borunda passed yesterday evening. Borunda was a resident of the city of San Diego.   Borunda was arrested and booked into Sheriff's custody by the San Diego Police Department on November 30, 2021. Borunda was booked into custody for 664 187(a) PC – Attempted Murder. The Medical Examiner's Office conducted an autopsy today. The cause and manner of death are pending laboratory results and further evaluation.      Media Contact: Lieutenant Thomas Seiver Email Address of Contact: [email protected] This press release was produced by San Diego County Sheriff's Department.
