Here are the top stories in Raleigh today: Raleigh police charged 31 people with driving while impaired over the weekend. The NC State Highway Patrol assisted the Raleigh police effort to cut down on aggressive driving, driving while impaired, and speed violations. There were also two guns confiscated as a result of the efforts. (CBS17)After a 5 day manhunt, Raequon Mudd has been taken into custody. Mudd was considered armed and dangerous following arson, and shooting into another home. Sheriff Gerald Baker publicly vowed to capture Mudd on Tuesday, and later that day residents near the search were informed that Mudd was in custody. (abc11)Data shows that 9th grade is typically the year with the highest number of students not proceeding to the next grade level, and this year nearly 1 in 6 North Carolina 9th graders will repeat the year. The Wake County Public School System is using federal COVID-19 stimulus funds to hire more school counselors and intervention teachers to help keep students from failing classes. (WRAL)As demand for COVID-19 testing is surging ahead of the holidays, Wake County had to offer alternative links for appointments when the site was knocked offline due to an update. With the spread of the Omicron variant, state health officials warn that we could see as many as 10,000 new cases a day in days ahead. (WRAL) Wake County is also adding 2,000 appointments for testing ahead of the holiday. (CBS17)On Monday Governor Roy Cooper and members of the state's coronavirus task force held a briefing regarding COVID-19 vaccinations and boosters shots. NCDHHS Secretary Mandy Cohen emphasized that the delta variant is still dominant in NC but the omicron variant is expected to take over relatively soon.
