1st Pediatric COVID-19 Death Reported In Solano County

SOLANO COUNTY, CA — A child has died from the coronavirus in Solano County, marking the county's first COVID-19-related pediatric death. The child was an infant younger than 1, officials with the Solano County Department of Health and Social Services, Public Health division confirmed. "We offer our deepest condolences to this child's loved ones during their time of grief," Dr. Bela Matyas, Solano County health officer, said in a news release. "This loss is an urgent reminder that children can get seriously ill and die from COVID-19. While pediatric deaths are incredibly rare, they are also very tragic." Authorities did not say where in the county the infant's family lived. As of Monday morning, there were 369 active COVID-19 cases in Solano County and 342 cumulative deaths since the start of the pandemic. Approximately 77 percent of Solano County residents have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, county officials said Monday. "I urge Solano residents to get vaccinated, or boosted, for COVID-19," Matyas said. "Getting the COVID-19 vaccine is the most effective approach we can take to protect our families and communities, most especially the children who are too young to get vaccinated." COVID-19 vaccines significantly reduce the risk of severe symptoms, hospitalizations and deaths, and help reduce the spread of COVID-19, county officials said. In Solano County, COVID-19 vaccine and booster shots are available for residents 5 and older. Mass vaccination clinics at the Solano County Fairgrounds, 900 Fairgrounds Drive in Vallejo, will operate until Jan. 29, the county said.
