Technical Lecture Topic: "Evolution of Geotechnical Design as Illustrated by the Building and Re-Building of the World Trade Center" Technical Lecture Topic:"Evolution of Geotechnical Design as Illustrated by the Building and Re-Building of the World Trade Center" Presented by: Raymond E. Sandiford, P.E., F.ASCE, National Practice Lead for Geotechnical Engineering HNTB The original World Trade Center was designed in the mid-1960’s. Marty Kapp lead a team of designers that used what was then the state-of-the-art in geotechnical engineering to design truly monumental structures. Although not the first use of the slurry wall construction method, its application at the WTC was monumental in scale and at the time a huge risk. The designers used the latest in earth pressure theory to model the staged construction of deep, multi-level walls and used instrumentation to validate their models. Also, the foundations for the slender twin towers presented another challenge. Working with Professors Hendron and Deere, the design team performed a full scale load test of a test foundation to develop the elastic behavior of the jointed bedrock under extreme loading. Although all of the original analyses, on punch cards, were lost, the test and instrumentation data survived and provided valuable information for the reconstruction after 9/11. Some of the features of the original construction had a profound bearing on the outcome of 9/11 and to be frank we were lucky. Ray will discuss how the current design leveraged the original design work and some of the lesser known geotechnical challenges of the WTC reconstruction. Registration/Cocktails at 5:00 pm Dinner at 6:30 pm | Technical Lecture at 7:30 pm The mission of the ASCE Metropolitan Section Chapter of the Geo-Institute is to provide members with opportunities to expand and share their knowledge and expertise of geotechnical engineering and geotechnical construction, particularly as it relates to the unique environment of the New York City metropolitan area. The Geotechnical Group aims to accomplish this through monthly technical lectures and annual specialty seminars. Attendees of the geotechnical lectures and seminar will receive accredited Professional Development Hours (PDHs) applied towards the Continuing Education Program of the P.E. licensing renewal. To learn about our upcoming technical lectures and seminars, please look at the event calendar on the right side of this page. If you would like to present one of your projects at one of our monthly lectures, or if you have any particular geotech-related topic that may be of Section members' interest, please do not hesitate to contact any of the group officers.
