Description

Help us prepare the Historic Orchard for tree planting, and help us get our new trees in the ground! The minimum age to volunteer for this event is 10 years old. Chaperones are required for individuals age 15 and younger. Our Historic Orchard has been going through the process of revitalization to prepare this site for new trees. An orchards typical lifespan is about 20-25 years, and the current Historic Orchard was planted in 1994 (27 years ago!) The trees in our orchard were no longer producing fruit due to old age, and suffered from parasites, diseases, and pests. We have removed the unhealthy trees from the Orchard site to make way for varieties that will be better adapted to our current and future climate. The remaining large trees in the Historic Orchard were those healthy enough to stay on site. The time has finally come to prep our site and plant new trees! Historic Orchard workdays offered in January and February of 2022 will focus on completing our final preparation in anticipation of tree planting and getting trees in the ground. We will be meeting at the picnic bench area in between the Heritage Rose Garden and the Historic Orchard. We know many community members are eager to help our parks, please join us as we practice safe measures of volunteerism. We will be adhering to State and County Public Health recommendations and guidelines pertaining to the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, please note that: You must bring your own work gloves suitable for working in a garden, as we are unable to provide gloves at this time. Leather gloves are highly recommended! Pleas bring a full water bottle (the water fountain will be unavailable for use at this time)The restrooms will be available after 10:00am in the Rotary PlayGarden.Volunteers are asked to arrive by 9:00 am for a contactless sign-in, workday instructions will follow. We will be providing all necessary tools for this event. The work will begin at 9:00 am and will run through 11:30 am. This event will be rain or shine given the urgency associated with getting new trees into the ground. School groups or corporate teams must contact the volunteer coordinator to schedule events. The ticket limit for this event is 3 tickets per group. The Guadalupe River Park Conservancy is a non-profit partner of the City of San Jose. The GRPC provides community leadership for the development and active use of the Guadalupe River Park & Gardens through education, advocacy and stewardship.
