GREAT NECK, NY — Authorities say a blaze that destroyed two landscaping trucks and damaged a home in Great Neck on Monday was either caused by human error or a mechanical failure. Around 8:40 p.m., the Great Neck Alert Fire Company received a call about multiple vehicles that caught fire behind a home on 8 North Rd. Upon arrival, crews found two landscaping trucks fully engulfed in flames, Fire Chief John Purcell told Patch. The Nassau County Arson Bomb Squad, as well as the jurisdiction's fire marshall, were also called to the scene for further investigation. According to Purcell, the fire started in one of the truck's trailers and spread to the other vehicle. The heat from the flames also melted the sidings of the home. Upon further investigation, investigators determined that the fire was not suspicious in nature — and instead was accidental or mechanical in nature. It could've been a cigarette that was carelessly disposed of or a machine — like a lawnmower — that overheated and burst into flames, Purcell told Patch. No injuries were reported and the fire was brought under control in under an hour.
