WATSONVILLE, CA — The Watsonville Police Department said it arrested a Pajaro Valley Unified School District student on suspicion of making criminal threats.
A threat targeting a local school was made Thursday night after a nationwide social media trend that threatened violence at schools Friday, police said.
As detectives investigated, Watsonville High School's school resource officer began coordinating with the school district to create a safety plan, which called for police to ramp up their presence at local schools.
Detectives learned a student was responsible, police said. Investigators determined the threats were not credible.
The student was arrested Friday afternoon.
"We ask parents to take the time to sit down with their kids and explain to them the severity of making fake social media threats and to keep tabs on their social media activity," police said.
