HOBOKEN, NJ — Firefighters recovered two victims from a Monday morning fire at an old factory building in southwest Hoboken, the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office confirmed Monday. Now they say the county's Arson Task Force is investigating the blaze, which — according to witnesses — included an explosion. The HCPO Tweeted at 3:30 p.m. on Monday: The Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force is responding to a fatal fire at 38 Jackson Avenue in Hoboken in which two victims were found during fire suppression activities by the Hoboken Fire Department. More information to follow.— ProsecutorSuarezHCPO (@HCPOProsecutor) December 20, 2021 Hoboken city spokesperson Marilyn Baer referred further questions to that office. Officials did not identify the victims or release further details. (Watch Patch later for updates.) The building at 38 Jackson St., near the Jersey City border, is home to many small businesses, including the Chambord artistic wallpaper company, but it does not contain residences. JerseyDigs had reported last summer that a developer was in the process of purchasing the property. The three-alarm blaze was put out by morning, and some streets were temporarily closed as responders cleaned up. Caren Lissner/Patch The city of Hoboken asked people to avoid nearby streets in the morning. The managers of the Mission 50 co-work space posted to let patrons know the building was open and could be reached by foot. [2/2] Jackson Street between Newark Street and Observer Highway, Harrison Street from Newark Street to Paterson Avenue, Paterson Plank Road from Congress Street as well as Ravine Road are closed to vehicular traffic at this time.— City of Hoboken (@CityofHoboken) December 20, 2021 The Southwest Park on Jackson Street also had police tape around it to keep pedestrians away. Onlookers posted photos and video on Twitter of the blaze: Crazy explosion in #Hoboken last night. Hope every everyone is safe and got out ok.
