Press release from the City of Cupertino:
December 16, 2021
On December 16. at approximately 2:22 p.m., Sheriff's Office West Valley Patrol Deputies received multiple 911 phone calls regarding a possible shots fired call located in the area of Cupertino High School (10100 Finch Avenue, Cupertino). 30+ deputies immediately responded to assess the scene, which also included our Sheriff's Office STAR1 Helicopter.
A lockdown was implemented by Cupertino High School. Out of an abundance of caution, a Shelter-in-Place was activated at nearby Sedwick Elementary and Hyde Middle School. County Communications started a reverse 911-call service to notify the surrounding neighborhood and businesses to Shelter-in-Place.
In collaboration with School Administration, Deputies completed a systematic and detailed search of every individual classroom at Cupertino High School and did not locate any evidence of a shooting.
During the investigation, deputies learned that the sound may have been fireworks or a vehicle's exhaust that backfired at a nearby bank parking lot. A thorough investigation revealed that the cause of the loud noise was in fact the loud backfire from a nearby vehicle.
Deputies checked the entire area to include nearby neighborhoods and determined there was no threat to public safety and no crime occurred.
The Sheriff's Office takes situations like this very seriously and will exhaust all resources to provide the highest level of public safety.
