Carlsbad Approves Age-Friendly Action Plan Supported By AARP

CARLSBAD, CA — Carlsbad has become North County's first city with an Age-Friendly Action Plan, as earlier this month the City Council approved a plan that would improve quality of life for people of all ages and abilities. The action plan makes recommendations for city goals and policies in six categories: Outdoor space and buildings, social and civic participation, housing, health and wellness, mobility and community connections. Voted in on Dec. 7, it will help Carlsbad make neighborhoods walkable, provide transportation, offer community activity participation and support affordable and adaptable housing for people with special needs. The plan makes Carlsbad part of the AARP's Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities, officials said, and it was created based on a community survey, conversations with residents, and Age-Friendly workshops. Now that it's been approved, a recommended three-year implementation plan was created, which would culminate in the AARP certifying Carlsbad as an Age-Friendly Community. "We aim to be a city that meets the challenges and opportunities of an aging population, so allages can participate in a fulfilling community life and enjoy robust health and well-being," City Manager Scott Chadwick said in a letter. "I truly hope that each and every one of you who live, learn, work and play in Carlsbad will join in the process of helping to build an even more Age-Friendly Carlsbad."
