Description
Follow along with a pro photographer and model on a live outdoor photo session and learn the ins and outs of professional portraiture. Portraiture. This flavor of photography can sometimes be common, and perhaps overlooked because of how ubiquitous it can be; just look to social media for examples. It can also be an awe-inspiring work of art, from intimate images of home life to incredible, socially significant portraits of beautiful, powerful people in the wider culture. But how as a photographer do you get from creatively stale images to producing incredible portraits? How do you refine the process and allow for the most amount of creativity? What ways can you improve your hit rate as a portrait photographer? In this class, that is exactly the mountain we intend to climb. Many classes give you the ability to shoot something small with limited instruction, but are usually more set up to allow you to just gain experience through practice. I myself have hosted many classes on the subject of portraiture that looked very similar in structure. In this class however, the goal is different. The purpose of this class is to give you a start to finish look at the process a photographer uses to create a portrait in great detail, without the pressure of creating yourself. As a result of that, there is no opportunity to shoot with the model on hand. Instead, attendees are encouraged to take notes and ask questions and engage with the process visually and aurally, to better refine their own understanding of portraiture techniques. PSA: Because the topics covered are considered advanced techniques, attendees should have a working knowlege of the exposure triangle, as well as the basic functionality of their camera. As a result of that, no time will be used in explaining basic camera terms during the lecture. Topic Overview At its core, telling a story is of the utmost priority in portraiture, so the class is aimed squarely at that goal. How various photographic techniques relate to that core principle is the main purpose of the class. * Learning how to manipulate depth of field, as well as learning how that impacts the storytelling ability of your camera in the moment, is one great example. * Learning your compositional choices, while adhering to a hierarchy of decision making that allows you to create the strongest image possible. * Interacting with your subject/model in a way that creates rapport and also builds trust in the creative process that you are both engaged in. * Gear choice, while not essential to the exercise of portraiture, is still a important thing to be aware of so we will be covering that some detail.
