Here are the top 5 stories in Sacramento today: A man is dead following a Friday night shooting in the area of 20th and K Streets. Officers tried to render aid to the man but he died from his wounds on the scene. At this time a motive for the shooting is unclear, but police believe there was some type of disturbance between two groups of people that escalated into the shooting. Police are asking anyone with information to call (916) 808-5471 or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at (916) 443-HELP (4357). Callers can remain anonymous. (ABC10)In response to extremely cold overnight temperatures in Sacramento County this weekend, county officials have opened two additional warming centers. Both locations will be open from 7 p.m. – 7 a.m. on Dec. 18 and 19. Sacramento Regional Transit will provide buses for warming center guests at both locations. Buses will make multiple trips for pick-up starting at 6 p.m. and making runs until 11:00 pm. Pets on a leash and in carriers are welcome on the buses as well. Citizens are asked to call 211 for more information on bus routes, warming center locations, dates and times. (FOX40)About an hour before sunrise on Saturday, burglars tore through a Pocket neighborhood apartment parking lot. They shattered windows and took whatever they could get their hands on. Sacramento police said they found evidence of at least 10 break-ins at the Reserve at Riverlake Apartments on Rush River Drive. There were 10 more at a complex around the corner on Greenhaven. Neighbors said they are frustrated at what they're calling a lack of widespread security on the property. They said the cameras currently there aren't cutting it. They want to see more widespread cameras on-site and more frequent security patrols. (FOX40)Folsom Cordova Unified School District's own Dr. Sarah Koligian has been named the 2021 California Superintendent of the Year. "This is a great honor to be named the Superintendent of the Year in California," Koligian said. "There are hundreds of impressive superintendents, whom I count as friends and mentors. I am humbled and greatly honored by this recognition." (Folsom Telegraph)Organizers of a rotating winter homeless shelter in Citrus Heights are seeking to enlist more help in preparation for the shelter opening later this month. The "winter sanctuary" program is put on by the Citrus Heights Homeless Assistance Resource Team (HART) and is slated to begin Sunday, Dec. 26 and rotate among various churches, as in prior years. The intake site will be at Messiah Lutheran Church, at 7801 Rosswood Drive. Room for up to 25 guests will be available, and those showing up for overnight accommodations will be able to secure small items and bicycles overnight. Resources are also provided at the winter sanctuary sites, with personnel on hand to assist with housing, work programs, and addiction recovery programs.
