Supervisors of First Responders provide guidance and support to others as they also face challenges and stress from their occupation. 4-Hour Instructor Led Facilitated Workshop Funded by FirstNET, training provided by FirstHELP and hosted by District 7 Fire & Rescue. Those who supervise first responders lead individuals in high stakes fields who are managing both cumulative and acute stressors.   This FIRST H.E.L.P. course will explain why the mental and physical health of agency personnel should be a high priority for all agencies, addresses development of supporting resources and discusses policy considerations. In this four-hour workshop co-facilitated by an experienced first responder and a first responder’s family member, participants will engage in meaningful conversations about the stressful and often traumatic life of a first responder. Participants should expect to leave the workshop with a better understanding of how stress and trauma affect first responder performance and be equipped with techniques to build resilience and initiate difficult conversations. Outcomes PEOPLE • Differentiate between two types of stress. • Recognize the effects of stress on employees. POLICY • Discuss agency mental health / wellness policies. PREVENTION - A RANGE of Options • Discuss family readiness networks. • Discuss Selection and Training of Peer Support Specialists. • Identify at least five wellness resources. • Employ a RANGE of five resilience skills. It is the mission of First H.E.L.P. to reduce mental health stigma through education, advocate for benefits for those suffering from post-traumatic stress, acknowledge the service and sacrifice and support the families of first responders we lost to suicide, assist first responders in their search for healing, lead policy makers and legislators toward necessary change, and to bring awareness to suicide and mental health issues within public safety.
