Press release from the City of Oak Creek:
12/17/2021 11:30 AM
A message from Mayor Daniel Bukiewicz:
Oak Creek is a vibrant, growing, diverse, and progressive community. On occasion, we experience painful reminders that our work to remain a welcoming community, a place of equity, a place for all ideas and lifestyle choices, is ongoing. The work that goes into the kind of City we strive to be tomorrow takes place today.
A recent incident reminded us of our continued responsibility as community leaders. It came from a place that gave me great personal pause: an institution populated by our youth. Specific facts may come out, or we may never learn the whole story. We trust our community leaders at the Oak Creek-Franklin Joint School District will capitalize on this particular instance as an instructive moment; we know their values are not suddenly re-defined by individual acts. And, while all actions or words of injustice are abhorrent, we hope that the next generation of ideas and ideals is better than the world laid before them. We trust that ideas and consciousness will not only continue to evolve but will accelerate at an even faster pace to advance the acceptance and, ultimately, the celebration of the differences that make us a stronger society.
Myself, my fellow elected leaders, our City staff, and our enlightened residents will condemn injustice and racial prejudice when we see it. Racial equity and love, and acceptance of all who decide to live, work, and visit Oak Creek will remain our work ahead. Reminders to the contrary will not disrupt our City's mission, values, and vision, nor will those reminders define our community. It will only serve as a reminder of the work to be done.
