JERSEY CITY, NJ — Police arrested an 18-year-old woman Friday morning after she falsely told police she was sexually assaulted while walking down a Jersey City street, according to a release from the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office.
The woman, who was not named in the release, has been charged with perjury, false swearing, and making a false report to law enforcement, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez announced.
On Dec. 11 just before 12:30 p.m., a sexual assault case was referred to the county Special Victims Unit. According to authorities, the woman told police that on Nov. 30, she was walking near Weldon Street and Dekalb Avenue in Jersey City when a man approached her from behind and sexually assaulted her before running away.
The following investigation and a review of surveillance footage led detectives to file false report charges, the prosecutor's office said.
The woman's first court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 7.
