Join us on the 2nd Wednesday of every other month for a wine tasting featuring a new wine at each event. Bring in your favorite bottle! The next meeting of the Grapevine Wine Tasting will be January 12, 2022, at 7pm at the Berkeley City Club. The tastings follow a familiar format. Each person (not each couple) will bring a bottle of the featured wine to the tastings. Wine glasses, tableware, bread, cheese, and wine tasting sheets will be provided by the Club in exchange for a fee of $20 for members and $25 for non-members. Attendees will be seated at tables of five to six people. You are welcome to specify if you wish to sit with friends. Often those requests can be accommodated. Reservations close at noon on Friday, January 7, so reserve your attendance now. The wine of choice will be any Cabernet Sauvignon or the so-called Bordeaux style blends. Traditionally Bordeaux’s famous red wine chateaux have used a combination of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a few other varietals to make their finished product. In California, the tradition developed around single varietal red wines. Cabernet Sauvignon was thought to be the premier wine in California especially if it came from the Napa Valley. Many California red wines are now Bordeaux style blends, although 100% Cabernet Sauvignon can still be easily found. The wine you bring to the tasting can be from anywhere in the world and can be a blend of grapes or made with just one type of grape. These red wine varietals are made in all parts of the world and the only constraint being that your choice of wine has one of the traditional Bordeaux red grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot or Cabernet Franc. Other grape types can be included in your choice as long as the majority of the wine is made from one of the traditional varietals. There are plenty of wines in this category to choose from, so start tasting now to determine your favorite to bring to the tasting on January 12.
