Good Friday morning Connecticut, Sadly, all eyes are on social media once again. Law enforcement and school officials in every community across the nation are keeping a close eye on TikTok concerning vague threats against schools on Friday. Connecticut is no different, and numerous local school districts issued statements on Thursday saying they are aware of the latest social media trend but that no credible threats had been detected. Some districts in Connecticut said they'd increase police presence at schools on Friday just out of an abundance of caution. But that changed in a couple of local school districts on Friday morning. Norwich and Region 10 public schools cancelled school due to the social media threats. In a letter to Norwich parents, officials said at 8 p.m. Thursday, middle school parents learned of a Snapchat story sent to students on social media by someone who they believed to attend the district. "The social media story allegedly referenced a threat to the school as well as a picture of what appeared to be a handgun," Norwich school officials wrote. Norwich officials said they made the decision to close school on Friday, so law enforcement can investigate the threat. In Region 10, school officials said late Thursday they received information from the state and local police regarding "possible threatening information specific to the Region 10 schools. The police are aware of the specific individuals involved and are already actively investigating. Given the late hour and the need to allow time for the police time to thoroughly investigate it is necessary for us to close all schools tomorrow, Friday December 17th." "The safety of our students and school community is paramount and in order to open schools I must have all the information possible that assures us that our schools and children are safe," said Howard Thiery, Superintendent of Region 10 schools. On Friday morning, Naugatuck police announced they learned of a possible threat against a Naugatuck school. A 13-year-old male shared a social media post "suggesting fellow students stay home from school today because of what he might do," police said. The student attends City Hill School, police said. He is charged with breach of peace, police said. Police have added extra presence to schools in Naugatuck on Friday.
