Description

Press release from Albuquerque Public Schools: December 16, 2021 We have recently learned of a TikTok challenge that may take place on Friday, Dec. 17. It is our understanding that the challenge encourages students to make threats of shootings, bomb threats and violence against schools. The Albuquerque Public Schools Police Department is aware of the social media challenge and we are working with them directly. As a result, you may see an increased security presence at schools. Our intent is to be transparent by sharing information with you, especially when it involves school safety and security. While we understand that this event is only a rumor, we also know that social media is a powerful tool often used to influence others. It is always important to remain vigilant when it involves these types of threats and challenges. Please take some time to talk to your children about the pressures of social media and the potential consequences of engaging in this type of behavior. This is also a good time to reiterate that everyone has a responsibility to share information related to the safety of our school community with the administration or a trusted adult immediately. We take threats — even those on social media — seriously. If a student is found to be engaging in any of these behaviors, we will follow the district discipline protocols, which could result in school disciplinary action, intervention by law enforcement, and prosecution. If you learn of anything that is concerning on social media or elsewhere, please contact your school principal to share your concerns immediately. While we know these challenges are out there, we also know that the vast majority of our students do the right thing every day. We are proud of our APS students and grateful they value their school communities and culture. Should the TikTok challenge directly impact any of our APS schools, we will take that threat seriously and work with law enforcement to ensure the safety and security of our students and staff.  This press release was produced by Albuquerque Public Schools.
