SAN FRANCISCO, CA — $300 can buy a lot around the holidays, but a San Francisco 6th grader decided she wanted to use her savings to help the less fortunate.
Erica Romanenko, a member of the Student Council at Stratford San Francisco Middle School, used her savings to buy toys to be donated to children at The Family House in Mission Bay, a home for families of children with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses.
"I want others to have a good family and a good holiday too," Romanenko said. "I really enjoy making others happy and I thought this would make a lot of kids happy. I want to share what I have and not be a selfish person. I would be a very happy person if I can continue to give to others and not keep all of my money for myself."
"It makes me proud to be the Student Council advisor when I see such unselfish acts of kindness from our students," said math teacher and student council advisor Ritika Manohar. "Others also followed this example and gave up their snack money which was a couple of dollars each, but what a wonderful gesture from a middle school-aged child."
"I am so proud of our Student Council members and their desire to help others," said Head of School Terry Britt. "This attitude goes throughout our student body. But it especially came to light in our Toy Drive. One of our 6th graders, Erica Romanenko, decided that she wanted to help the kids that weren't getting toys for Christmas. She donated her own money totaling $300 to the charitable effort. She could not stand the idea that kids would not have something for Christmas and wanted to help fill that void."
