PHILADELPHIA, PA — The scheduled Eagles game on Sunday has been postponed due to COVID-19, the NFL announced. It was one of three NFL games pushed back due to a surge of cases around the league.
The Eagles will now play their game against the Washington Football Team on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
"We have made these schedule changes based on medical advice and after discussion with the NFLPA as we are seeing a new, highly transmissible form of the virus this week resulting in a substantial increase in cases across the league," the NFL announced in a statement.
At least 23 players on Washington's roster reportedly have the virus, including starting and backup quarterbacks Taylor Heinicke and Kyle Allen.
The Las Vegas vs. Cleveland and Seattle vs. St. Louis games were also delayed this weekend due to similar outbreaks.
The move is not without controversy. While the Eagles do have two players on the COVID-19 injured reserved list, they have not seen their roster decimated as Washington has. Postponing the game instead of forfeiting it means that the Birds will be on short rest heading into next week's game. Fans and analysts are pointing to as unfair as the Eagles are being punished despite following tight virus protocols.
Damn I thought the team would have to forfeit!!! This crazy— Darius Slay (@bigplay24slay) December 17, 2021 At least one of the Washington players to contract the virus was unvaccinated, reports state.
