MISSION VIEJO, CA — Do you have questions about the new recycling program rolling out on New Year's Day? The City of Mission Viejo wants to hear you. On Thursday, the City of Mission Viejo and Waste Management, the city's waste hauler, will host a virtual townhall regarding the new Residential Food Scrap Recycling Program, the city announced Tuesday. The new recycling program stems from California's recently-added Senate Bill 1383, which requires residents statewide to participate in organics recycling in order to reduce climate pollutions coming from local landfills. Starting Jan. 1, residents should begin placing food scraps like fruit and vegetable trimmings, eggshells, pasta, grains, coffee grounds and expired food (among other things) into the green-lidded container provided by Waste Management of Orange County, the city said. The materials will be collected on garbage day and transported to a facility for composting. The virtual meeting link is open to the public, and no registration is required to attend the townhall.
