LEMONT, IL — The Lemont Village Board honored the late Herb Zielke, who was a former trustee and mayor of the village, at Monday's board meeting. Zielke's contributions and dedication to the Village was acknowledged with an honorary street sign in his name placed at Singer and Eureka avenues, according to the Village. Mayor John Egofske said Zielke's grandson, Eric Ravasz, wanted to honor his grandfather on the first anniversary of his death for his love and dedication to the Village. Zielke was born in Lemont in 1934 and grew up on Walnut Street, Egofske said. Both of Zielke's parents were also born in Lemont in the late 1800s. Zielke graduated from St. Matthew grade school in 1948, and was known as a star football player at Lemont High School, where he graduated in 1952, Egofske said. Zielke served as a U.S. Marine in the Korean War, and became a sheet metal worker when he returned home. "Herb was a very active person in the Lemont community," Egorske said. Zielke became a Village Trustee in 1975, and served until 1982. He was appointed as acting village president in 1982 and elected mayor in 1983. "Herb truly loved Lemont, and he and his first wife, Joan, raised their daughters, Sharon and Kathy, at their home on [Singer Avenue]," Egofske said. Zielke's children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were present at Monday's board meeting. "What better way to honor their father and grandfather, Herb Zielke, than to place an honorary street sign on the street where he raised his family," Egofske said.
