JOLIET, IL — Nearly an entire year after being involved in a hit-and-run collision on Plainfield Road and Ingalls Avenue, 54-year-old Crest Hill resident Richard Hurst surrendered to police, the Joliet Police Department announced Friday.
On Thursday morning, Hurst was arrested by Joliet police on charges of leaving the scene of a property damage accident and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. While at the Joliet police station, Hurst complained of a medical issue and an ambulance brought him to St. Joe's hospital, where he remained Friday, according to police.
Around 8:45 p.m. on Dec. 23, 2020, Hurst was driving southbound on Plainfield Road near Ingalls Avenue when he collided into the back of a car ahead of him stopped at the red light, according to Joliet police reports.
Hurst's wreck caused the car in front of him to crash into a third vehicle, police said.
"Hurst then fled the scene of the accident without stopping to provide aid or information," Joliet police spokesman Dwayne English announced. "No injuries resulted from the crash."
Joliet police's traffic unit identified Hurst as being the driver who caused the wreck and the hit-and-run motorist, and on May 6 Joliet police obtained an arrest warrant for Hurst.
Then, at 9:45 a.m., Hurst visited the Joliet police station to turn himself in and Hurst was then transported to AMITA St. Joseph Medical Center for a medical issue where he currently remains, police spokesman Dwayne English announced.
