Vigil For 'Victims Of Violence' Taking Place On The UWS

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — A vigil for "victims of violence" is taking place this weekend on the Upper West Side. The event is set to start Sunday at 3:30 p.m. and run until 5 p.m. outside the train station at West 72nd Street and Broadway — within Verdi Square. "This holiday season, we unite across NYC as One City — to mourn those killed and support those left behind and hurt by violent crime," reads a flier for the event. The event is sponsored by OneCity Rising NYC, Save Brooklyn, Victims Rights New York, Excelsior NYC, UWS Together, and West Side Community Organization. UWS Together, formerly known as Upper West Siders For Safer Streets, is the Facebook page created in response to men experiencing homelessness being moved into The Lucerne hotel in July 2020. The West Side Community Organization is a nonprofit that was created by members of that Facebook group who eventually hired Attorney Randy Mastro to push the city to move the men out of the Lucerne and back to Lower Manhattan. Maria Danzilo, who ran for City Council on the Upper West Side this year, and pulled the majority of her support from the Upper West Siders For Safer Streets Facebook page (15,000 members), took to Twitter to advertise the vigil on Sunday. There is no mention on the flier or anywhere else that the event will have a focus on Upper West Side crime.
