Training and Cool Heads Help Mount Vernon Cops To Save 2-Year-Old

MOUNT VERNON, NY — Thanks to the quick thinking of Mount Vernon police officers and training on life-saving first aid techniques, a two-year-old is now recovering from a life-threatening seizure. On Monday evening, Mount Vernon police were called to East Birch Street, responding to a report about an unconscious child. Officer Barrett and Officer Cartwright were met by parents who were carrying their two-year-old daughter who was completely unresponsive. The two officers quickly realized the child was suffering from a seizure and had a clogged throat that was obstructing her breathing. They immediately instructed the father to lay his daughter on the table and place her in a recovery position to begin clearing the airway. The child was able to recover a few seconds later after a few forceful blows to her back which helped to clear her airways. The young girl began to become more alert and responsive after the life-saving technique was put in action. When an ambulance arrived, the child and her parents were transported to the Children's Hospital at Montefiore in the Bronx.
