MOKENA, IL — A TikTok challenge making the rounds has police, schools and parents on alert. The challenge reportedly calls for students to threaten gun violence Dec. 17.
Mokena Police Interim Chief Brian Benton told Patch via email Thursday that "We are aware of the new TikTok challenge that is circulating. We have been in contact with administrative staff at both Mokena School District 159 and St. Mary's Catholic School regarding the matter. At this time there is no credible threat to the safety of our children but, out of an abundance of caution, we will maintain an increased police presence around our school's tomorrow, specifically during ingress and egress."
Lincoln-Way Community High School District 210 sent an email to parents stating that there was "no indication of specific threats within Lincoln-Way District 210 at this time."
"Safety is our top priority," the statement continued. "We are in communication with local law enforcement and will continue to be vigilant in monitoring the situation. Please be sure to report any concerning messages that you see or hear to administration and/or local authorities."
Other police departments in the Lincoln-Way area are issuing similar statements. The New Lenox and Frankfort Police Departments have both told Patch that they are aware of the challenge and are increasing the police presence around schools.
