Congratulations to the coaches, players, parents and everyone associated with Thunderbirds football at my alma mater, Half Hollow Hills High School East in Dix Hills. _______ Photo: Louis Mathurin and Dakim Griffin are Hills East football award recipients. Virgintino) _______ We got to the Suffolk County Division II championship game this season, and though we lost by only a few points, significant accomplishments on offense and defense throughout the season will ensure future success for Hills East football. The program is guided by head coach Alex Marcelin, who completed his first season at the helm, and his staff of Brian Hanover (offensive coordinator), John Ruggerio (defensive coordinator), Braddon Brightman, Ryan G., Brad Mckoy, Adrian Montalvo and Joseph Rickerson. 2021 Football Awards As a benefactor for the football program, I was provided with the unique opportunity to name 12 of the 13 new team awards that honor former Hills East players who were outstanding on and off the field. The school decided to name the remaining award, its offensive player award, to honor my contributions as a player and benefactor. 2021 Hills East Football Awards Scott McLam Team MVP Award -- Dakim Griffin James C. Dakim scored 35 touchdowns. More success awaits Dakim, who I believe is the best high school football player I’ve ever seen. He also received the Joe Cipp Award as Suffolk County’s top running back. People often ask me about Dakim and I always respond the same way. There is only one player who runs with the football like Dakim Griffin. That’s Dakim Griffin. I’ve watched high school football for 50 years. Dakim is the best runner from scrimmage I’ve ever seen. His style is his own.
