Press release from the University of Alabama at Birmingham: December 15, 2021 Yogesh Vohra, Ph.D. Photography: Steve WoodTwo grants totaling over $417,000 have been awarded to the University of Alabama at Birmingham's College of Arts and Sciences and will provide support to the college's Research Experiences for Undergraduates program.  The UAB REU is a 10-week program that involves a hands-on research experience for undergraduate students and allows participants to work in the labs of some of the university's renowned faculty members. A grant renewal from the National Science Foundation has been awarded to Yogesh Vohra, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Physics and associate dean for the UAB College of Arts and Sciences. Vohra will serve as the principal investigator and will partner with historically Black colleges and universities in Alabama to increase participation from underrepresented groups.  The project will offer a broad range of interdisciplinary materials and research experiences to the undergraduate students with a diversity of backgrounds in physics, chemistry, applied mathematics and engineering. The second grant is from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration – Alabama Space Grant Consortium, and the funds will support an REU program during summer 2022. "The awards we received from the NSF and NASA will allow us to increase the stipend the REU students receive," Vohra said. "This will make UAB's REU program nationally competitive and attract highly qualified undergraduates." This press release was produced by the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
