Here are the top 5 stories today in Atlanta: An initiative called "In Her Hands" will soon give more than 600 low-income Black women $850 a month for two years. Created through a partnership between the Georgia Resilience and Opportunity Fund and Give Directly, the program is designed to help Georgians most impacted by poverty by examining how guaranteed income can improve a person's life, offer stability, and translate those findings into policy. Funded by private donations, "In Her Hands" will initially be available to Black women living in Old Fourth Ward, the Atlanta neighborhood Martin Luther King Jr. once called home, which has the largest concentration of Section 8 housing in the Southeast. Give Directly is expected to start accepting applications for the program in early 2022. (CBS46 News Atlanta)The Biden administration recently appointed Atlanta city official Reese McCranie to the position of senior advisor for the Office of Public Affairs at U.S. Customs & Border Protection. Prior to his appointment, McCranie worked for the City of Atlanta for 12 years, most recently as Deputy Chief Equity Officer for Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms. McCranie, who is gay, helped establish Atlanta's first-ever Office of Equity, Diversity & Inclusion. Regarding his new appointment, McCranie said, "It is a tremendous honor to work alongside the more than 60,000 dedicated individuals at U.S. Customs and Border Protection." (Project Q Atlanta)According to a nationwide cycling organization, the most bike-friendly community in Georgia is in metro Atlanta. Decatur was the first, and only, city in the state to earn the group's Silver-level designation. Other Georgia cities earning Bronze-level recognition for their cycling infrastructure include Alpharetta, Atlanta, Columbus, Peachtree City, Roswell and Savannah. Stefhon Hamilton, 21, was taken into custody Wednesday in northwest Atlanta and charged with two counts of ffelony murder, according to police. On Nov. 22, officers responded to reports of a person stabbed at a Jackson Street apartment, finding 31-year-old Daniel Aaron and 30-year-old Kristen McDevitt dead from stab wounds at the scene. Surveillance video of the suspect was later released by police, showing him outside the door closest to the victims' apartment, then running down the hall with a large safe and wearing surgical gloves.
