I'm looking for people in the Portland, ME area interested in martial arts training. Open enrollment now for January 2022. Space is Limited. What: Hawaiian / Okinawan Kempo Karate and Filipino Martial Arts(FMA). Classes will incorporate joint mobility / warm up, skill development (weapons & empty hand), physical conditioning, flexibility training, and meditation / QiGong practice in a club-type atmosphere. Me: 32 years of experience in the Martial Arts (24 in Hawaiian Kempo, 5 in FMA, 9 in Federal Law Enforcement); Past personal trainer and current Traditional East Asian Medicine practitioner. I would really like to gather some people who are interested in traditional training, practical application, and exploring these martial forms and how they fit into contemporary society. You: 18 years of age or older AND an Adult. Yes, these are two separate things. Previous experience in martial arts a plus, but not absolutely necessary. Familiarity/comfortable with safely interacting with springy hardwood floors (rolling/ukemi). Also comfortable with stairs to get to the training space. Gender is unimportant, but that being said, I would love to get a mix as I believe different energies improve training for all. Vaccinated & Masked. I'm afraid I can't sway on this, for the health and safety of my patients and those that will be sharing our training space. If you have a medical condition that prevents vaccination and would like to discuss other options to group training, please let me know. When: Monday and Thursday Nights, 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm, starting in January. Ideally Monday's will be Kempo, and Thursday's will be FMA Where: I have a line on indoor training space that will keep us safe from the Winter elements. This space has room for only 10 people, so at this time enrollment will be limited. Monthly fees will be $50 for either Monday or Thursday class, or $80 for both. My goal is to create a non-profit and reinvest proceeds in more permanent training space and equipment, with any excess going back into the community.
