Description
Come hear songs and poetry that sing of the journey of light into darkness and the serenading beauty of dreams. Once upon a time, a live performance like this was a routine occurrence in my pre-pandemic life. However, in this moment, it is a rare and precious gem, and I’m honored and delighted to invite you into sharing an evening of Art Song with Spire Duo. Andrew and I have used the poetic theme of Dreams to weave together poetry and music that explores the depths, nuance, and range of the imaginal realm of dreams. Dreams can be a space for creative play, radical imagination, and fertile ground for connecting with one another. They can illuminate our deepest fears and vulnerabilities, and they can unite entire social movements. Dreams are powerful! Sharing those kinds of dreams - even admitting that we have them - requires courage, and courage requires vulnerability, which takes strength of spirit. Carl Jung described dreams as “a little hidden door in the innermost and most secret recesses of the soul…’ I am learning that sharing our dreams - with all their hopes and fears - can serve as a reminder for what is possible when we allow our hearts to serve as the compass for our actions. The dreams in this program are at times wistful, desperate, hopeful, pensive, anxious, gentle, surreal, loving, tragic, and optimistic. In short, these songs capture many of my own experiences of what it is to be fully human, and can offer context to see ourselves reflected in the experiences of others and experience the thread of our common humanity. Throughout the process of preparing this program to share with you, it has been a gift to be in the company of poets and composers who use music and words to shed light into the darkness. It has been a gift to be invited into a dream world that is beautiful and honest and loving, and to contemplate the divine mystery of that which it is not quite possible to fully grasp. We hope you join us to share space and dream for an evening together at Central Lutheran Church on Saturday Dec 18th at 7:30pm. Suggested donations of $20 appreciated. Bring your mask, a vaccination card or negative test, and your dreaming self!
