Celebrate the contemporary works of Asian Americans with Hyphenated, a year-around book club series hosted by the AARC. This Winter, UT Austin’s Center for Asian American Studies’ Assistant Director, Tony k. Vo, will return to facilitate a discussion on Elaine Castillo’s 2018 novel, America is Not the Heart. Meet up is in person at the AARC. Space is limited. Book is not supplied. This meet up is for participants who are 18 and older. “Elaine Castillo’s debut novel, “America Is Not the Heart,” with its echoing title, draws a clear line of descent from Bulosan’s testament. A portrait of Filipinos in 1990s California, it’s hungrily ambitious in sweep and documentary in detail, and reads like a seismograph of the aftershocks from trading one life for another.” - New York Times (2018) About Our Community Partner Tony K. Vo. is the Assistant Director at the University of Texas at Austin’s Center for Asian American Studies. Prior to his current position, Tony was the Assistant Director for the Multicultural Engagement Center. He graduated from UT in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Asian American Studies, and later came back to receive a MSSW in Social Work.
