Description

Celebrating the courageous leaders of the past while showing how the movement for African community self-determination continues today! Join this special MLK Day Event and Volunteer Project! Monday, January 17th at 10 am 7911 MacArthur Blvd, Oakland, CA Today, the black community faces higher rates of homelessness, imprisonment, unemployment, poverty and early death than we did in the 1960s. The Uhuru Movement is the only organization that acknowledges that the civil rights and black power movements of the 50s and 60s were militarily defeated with our leaders being killed, jailed or forced into exile. The conditions that we face today are not the result of a victory of those struggles, but the result of that defeat and it is up to us to complete the struggle for self-determination. This powerful event will look at historic footage, celebrating the brilliance and courageousness of our leaders during that period. Then we will see footage of how this struggle continues today and how we can participate. Next, we will go out into the community in teams, putting doorhanger flyers on doorknobs to let people in the community know how they can get involved and support African community self-reliance and self-determination. Finally there will be a pizza lunch for everyone, an open mic to hear from you and your experience, door prizes and music. Please RSVP, due to COVID safety considerations seating will be limited. Also let us know if you'd like to help on set up or clean up for the event or if you can volunteer to be a driver for volunteers to their neighborhoods for the outreach portion of the day. This event is sponsored by the African People's Education and Defense Fund (APEDF.org) and Black Star Industries. Both are organizations of the Uhuru Movement, standing in defense of the civil and human rights of the African community, programs for economic development, job training, employment, education and health and pushing back gentrification. The Uhuru Movement has over 50 institution and programs for African community self-determination. Find out more, visit BlackPowerBlueprint.org.
