Dan Jones, Steve Tulipana, and Matt Ronan play garage'y indie rock and roll songs inspired by The Minutemen, Husker Du, Guided By Voices, Alex Chilton, Meat Puppets, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, and Lou Reed. Also corn dogs, misplaced remote controls, bungled time management, Royals baseball, and excessive caffeine consumption. Jones has been leading lineups of The Squids for more than twenty years, first in the Pacific Northwest and for the last 8 years in KCMO. When Jones first made the burgeoning Pacific Northwest Americana scene, The Oregonian declared “any given verse of his songs packs more wit than a roomful of singer-songwriters could muster in a month of open mics.” The Eugene Weekly later called him the “bed-headed poet laureate of Eugene…[finding] beauty in the ordinary while coaxing poetry from things most writers leave in the garage.” The Big Takeover has compared recent Squids to Devo, Drive-By Truckers, and legendary art-punkers Urinals/100 Flowers. Since relocating to KCMO in 2013, Jones and the Squids have released We Live In A World That Is Out of This World (2019) and Serve Without Delay, a live pandemic album of new tunes, recorded live at recordBAR and released in 2021.
